Research: Intertextuality in Music Videos

Intertextuality in music videos
Intertextual references in relation to music videos are when the artist/band has links to TV programmes, other films or other music video's. Intertextualily in music videos can boost the artist's and the single as publicity and interest in the music video would increase when relevant intertextual references
An example of intertexuality in music videos could be Lady Gaga's 'paparazzi' music video in which at the beginning  film credits are shown which shows the characters acting in the the music video in reference to a film. Moreover there are newspaper headlines and articles intertextually refer to her own life by form of newspaper.

Example also uses intertextuality in his music video 'stay awake' as we can clearly see visual references to Alice in Wonderland by the novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the 2010 film Alice in Wonderland.

Eminem - ' Without me' has multiple examples of intertextual references to the comic book hero's Batman and Robin. Throughout the music video the theme and narrative is told in the form of a comic book strip. Moreover, Eminem is dressed up as Robin implying he is a hero in the same form as a comic book hero.

Explain why it is used and why it might appeal to an audience
Intertextuality could appeal to the audience as it gives an insight into that artists ideologies and what they enjoy, as this would be in the interest of the audience because they idolise the particular artist/band. Moreover, the audience could find it educational or comical which would also be another beneficial point for the audience. Intertextuality could also be used because its a new idea and its interesting and popular in music videos.

Explain the criticisms that may follow intertextual references
There are also significant criticisms of intertextuality. There is the issue of the intertextual reference  used is legal and that the artist/band are legally able to use it in their video. It could also be considered as offensive to some viewers as it could convey people in negative ways.

Explain if you are going to use any intertextual references in your music video
The idea of intertextual references are appealing to use in my own music video. I could easily express an idea about something of mine and my groups choice. It is an idea that I would like to explore and consider using depending on the artist of song that I use. If i was to use intertextual references in my music video i would make it relevant to my music video and the genre of my choice.
